The Importance of Good Nutrition – Tecla Heuring
As a pet professional I believe that one of my obligations to the dogs that I train is to provide them with the best possible dog food that I can find. I believe that a balanced human grade diet containing the appropriate amount of high quality protein is necessary to every dog’s well being. Think about it this way, are you going to be at your best if you eat a Big Mac and french fries every day? Probably not. You need a well-rounded diet with healthy proteins, vegetables, and fiber sources.
Your dog needs the same – he will be at his best, mentally as well as physically, when he receives a high-quality diet. The difficult task in all of this is to decide what “high-quality” means. I have researched this over the course of the past 8 years and have come to the conclusion that one of the most important factors in choosing a good diet is to find one that is human-grade. This is much more difficult than it sounds. We tend to think that phrases like “premium chicken” or “real beef” or “no by-products” mean human grade and this is simply not the case. The only way that a diet is human grade is if it states that it is human grade and is inspected by the USDA – case closed. Other important factors include the quality of and how much protein is in the food and what kinds of carbohydrates are used.
After much consideration I have found two dog foods that satisfy the important criteria for being a nutritionally balanced human-grade canine diet: K-9 Kraving (a fresh frozen raw diet) and Life’s Abundance (a dry food or kibble). I have fed K-9 Kraving for the past 6 years and have observed my dogs as well as the dogs of friends and clients thrive on it. As for Life’s Abundance, I found it after years of searching for a dry food alternative to the raw diet and it is the only kibble that I can recommend. Again, I believe that it is my obligation as a pet professional to get the word out and provide as many dogs as I can with the opportunity for the best possible nutrition they can have. K-9 Kraving is formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles for all life stages.
K-9 Kraving is a nutritionally complete diet for dogs formulated from a diverse selection of the highest quality ingredients, each selected with your pet’s health in mind.
Chicken: USDA chicken including ground chicken bones, which deliver not only wholesome calcium and phosphorus in the correct amounts and ratios, but also other essential macro and trace minerals. In addition, it is a unique contributor of connective tissue and one of the few natural sources of chondroitin, critical to large breed skeletal health.
Beef: USDA beef & beef livers which provide a concentrated source of lean muscle that is high in protein due to its intense metabolic activity and many enzymes. Animals, like humans, require the enzymes, amino acids and other nutrients in the fresh, raw meat in order to stay healthy. Beef hearts and livers are also a concentrated source of several water and fat-soluble vitamins in natural form, as well as critical trace minerals, including copper.
Turkey: USDA turkeys which are fed a vegetarian diet fortified with vitamins and minerals - a natural defense against bacterial organisms. These turkeys never receive antibiotics or growth promotants at any time. Animal by-products, fats, bakery or pet food products are never used in the poultry feed. In addition to the antibiotic free and nutritious vegetarian feed these turkeys have free range access to outdoor areas that provide natural sunlight and fresh air.
Flax Seed: An excellent source of essential fatty acids involved in the regulation of hormones and immune capacity.
Assorted Vegetables: Fresh, wholesome vegetables that are high in desirable vitamins, minerals, & antioxidants. These vegetables, combined with raw chicken & beef, retain many health-enhancing benefits that are missing in processed, cooked dog food.
Kelp: Known to be high in iodine and other essential trace minerals.

Olewo Carrots: K-9 Kraving uses Olewo Carrots - easier to digest than whole carrots. Carrots provide tremendous health benefits to dogs. They are a great source of beta-carotene, B vitamins, minerals and trace elements.
